Mary Washington Hospital has received the IBCLC Care Award from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners for maintaining a high-functioning lactation program and employing nurses who are also certified lactation consultants.

Mary Washington Hospital has received the IBCLC Care Award from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners for maintaining a high-functioning lactation program and employing nurses who are also certified lactation consultants.

The IBCLC Care Award is reserved for hospitals and community based facilities that protect, promote and support breastfeeding. Specific criteria include having a dedicated lactation program available 5 – 7 days a week and having staff that is currently IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) certified.

For fifteen years, Mary Washington Hospital has developed and maintained an extensive lactation program, which includes:

  •     Breastfeeding classes taught by experienced certified lactation consultants.
  •     Hands on inpatient lactation consultations for post partum breastfeeding moms
  •     Outpatient lactation consults for moms who have breastfeeding concerns after being discharged from the hospital
  •     Warm line for breastfeeding questions
  •     Community based breastfeeding support group

“We have certified lactation specialists on-site 7 days/week for our patients, families and even community members”, says Judi Hall, a veteran lactation consultant with Mary Washington Hospital. “Our phone number is available to moms after they go home who may have concerns about breastfeeding that didn’t arise while they were in the hospital.”
