BAK, NBK, and OLD files are associated with a variety of different file types, one of which is a backup file. Avanquest recently introduced recommendations on the main types of software to open these file extensions considering the arising issues with creation of backup files. The focus is they can be created either by individual software applications or they can be part of a standalone program that is specifically designed for that.

Avanquest reveals that file extension BAK as a backup file type is automatically created by specific software applications or a device operating system. If the file is created with Microsoft Word, it typically looks like filename.docx. When Microsoft Word creates a backup file, the file name will be filename.docx.bak. In the event the file becomes corrupt, the BAK file will serve as a restoration file.

For the NBK file extension which serves as a script backup file, Avanquest recommends NovaBACKUP and Data Backup, which are software applications designed for use with the Windows operating system. This type of backup file will save a backup and then offer a list of commands for specific files and folders. The commands instruct the software application on how to handle backups in terms of scheduling, increments, and more.

Avanquest also provides recommendations on the main software for opening file extension OLD. The extension is usually created when a newer version of the file has been saved by a software application. OLD files can be accessed when the new copy of the file has become damaged, accidentally deleted, or corrupt. That means if the file is created in Microsoft Word and titled filename.docx, the program will automatically create a file named filename.docx.old.

Backup file types are associated with many applications and therefore can be opened using an array of programs. Depending upon the file, the backup file is either opened using the application it is associated with or by using a standalone backup software application. The following software applications will open BAK, NBK, and OLD files.

NovaBACKUP: File extension NBK can be opened using NovaBACKUP Professional 14.1 which is a backup software application that supports both local and online storage destinations. NovaBACKUP can be customized to backup individual files, entire systems, drives, and software applications. Backups can be scheduled in increments, full backups, or differential backup. NovaBACKUP is available as a trial on the NovaStor website and is compatible with the Windows operating system.

Data Backup PC 3: Prosoft Engineering Data Backup PC 3 is data recovery software which will open file extension BAK and NBK. Data Backup PC3 will backup and recover lost data, files, software applications, and restore files in the event of hard drive corruption, errors, virus attacks, or operating system failure. Data Backup PC 3 is available as a trial on the Prosoft website and is compatible with the Windows operating system. Mac OS X users can use Data Rescue PC 3 for Mac which can be obtained on the Prosoft website as well.

ACT! Pro: Sage ACT! Pro provides a suite of business productivity tools which utilize file extension BAK. ACT! Pro is a software application which is used by small businesses and sales teams to manage tasks associated with designated contact lists and calendar events. File extension BAK can be opened using the ACT! Pro application which can be obtained in a paid version on the Sage website and is compatible with the Windows operating system.
Original Programs: File extension OLD and BAK sometimes require the original program which created the file. In this instance, it is necessary to identify what software application or operating system created the file to open it and view the contents.

These are a few of the methods that Avanquest recommends in the database of file extensions to open BAK, NBK, and OLD files. There is a broad range of other applications which will open these types of files according to which application created them.
