Since opening its doors in 1988, Edge Studio has always been a strong believer in "green voice over" –- "green" meaning eco-friendly, not people new to the industry. This past week, they launched a campaign promoting Green Voice Over Recording.
Edge Studio has a lot of traffic in and out of their space. This means lots of water, coffee, and tea drinking. They have implemented a solid eco-friendly system including water cups made out of compostable corn, and coffee/tea cups that are 100% compostable. Edge Studio has also installed all LED lights in all their studios that save electricity, produce no excess heat (which saves air conditioning energy expansion), and ultimately helps the environment.
Historically, voice over recording studios print scripts on paper. Due to Edge Studio’s large client base coupled with the amount of long form narration that is recorded (documentaries, training videos, audiobooks…), tens of thousands of scripts were printed annually. Now, Edge Studio has voice actors read scripts off of iPads to eliminate paper printing. The iPads employ software allowing voice actors, engineers, and editors to take and save notes on the screen itself, such as highlighting important words. In addition to saving many trees, it puts forth a new behavior, thus changing people’s attitudes about wasting paper when printing scripts.
Edge Studio implemented a "bag-less" initiative. Every employee at Edge Studio gets 25cents every time they don't use a bag. Edge Studio owner, David Goldberg said, "Most people pick up lunch and walk back with one sandwich in one bag. Then they just toss the bag. It's just as easy to carry the sandwich without a bag. So if even 12 of us here each use 3 less bags each week, we save near 2,000 bags annually!" Edge keeps a chart to motivate each other to be “green-er."
This Green Campaign also includes rewards for "green" behavior that go towards any Edge Studio class, voice over coaching, or training program in their education department. Edge Studio will continue to inspire the Voice Over industry, and ultimately promote "green" behavior for the future of voice over.
