Eighty percent of U.S. employees will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their career accounting for one of the highest health care/productivity costs faced by employers. Treatment often involves extensive and expensive physical therapy. A new study from Tel Aviv University has found the most effective therapy is also the least expensive in alleviating lower back pain: aerobic walking. TrekDesk Treadmill Desk offers employees both a preventative measure and potential cure for lower back pain by allowing employees to walk while they work.
The study, led by Dr. Michal Katz-Leurer of Tel Aviv University’s Stanley Steyer School of Health Professions at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, was published this week in the journal Clinical Rehabilitation. The study authors found that walking engages abdominal and back muscles synchronically, similar to physical therapy solutions designed to target specific muscles individually. The study involved 52 participants with half completing a muscle strengthening program meeting 3x weekly for a six week period and the other half undertaking an aerobic walking program. The outcome of the study found that both groups benefited equally however the walking group results came at a much lower cost despite being “as effective as treatment that could have been received in the clinic,” stated Dr. Katz-Leurer. The study also emphasized that the walking regimen encouraged a healthier lifestyle since the treatment remained in the hands of the individual not a therapist.
The TrekDesk Treadmill Desk offers a unique advantage to employees. First, employees are less likely to develop lower back problems since they are walking at work. Second, should they need to walk more to alleviate lower back symptoms they can do it without taking extra time out of their day.
“Cramping employees into chairs has a number of harmful effects on the body,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desk. “This is definitely a case where an ounce of prevention equating to walking while working is worth more than a pound of cure. 83% of medical claims are caused by lifestyle issues that could be controlled. Greater emphasis has to be placed on methods of prevention and education regarding the environmental causes of disease and disability. The issue of lower back pain is a great example.”
