Private Detectives comment on recent Telegraph article dated 7th March 2013: Facebook fuelling divorce, research claims

Private Detective has seen a rise in matrimonial surveillance investigations and in my professional opinion Facebook and other social networking sites are responsible for a lot of it.

According to the Telegraph article, lawyers claim Facebook is being cited in almost one in five divorce petitions. Facebook is not the only social networking site to be linked with divorce; Bebo and Friends Reunited are also being blamed.

The report goes on to say that suspicious spouses have used the websites to find things out about their partner and gain evidence of affairs and cheating, which has led to divorce. Evidence such as inappropriate sexual chats with people they are not supposed to, and flirty emails and messages found on Facebook, are cited as unreasonable behaviour.

With the use of social networking sites to communicate with old friends or to make new ones, Private Detectives believe that many more people may divorce as a result of bored husbands and wives contacting old flames and first loves. Many investigations that are carried out by Private Detectives have been requested because of suspicious behaviour of a spouse or partner using a social networking site. The person making the request could have accidentally seen a message that was meant for a lover or the Facebook page could have been left open and the spouse or partner seen the contents.

Spokesperson Ashlea Peters, from Private Detective said: “Private Detective has seen a rise in matrimonial surveillance investigations and in my professional opinion Facebook and other social networking sites are responsible for a lot of it. Nowadays it is very easy to have a secret affair over the internet that can be kept from a partner as long as the person having the affair is careful to hide communication.”
