Disability attorney Deborah G. Kohl, of the Law Offices of Deborah G. Kohl, weighs in on the expected upsurge in the SSD applications due to ‘sequester.’

For people who are disabled and unable to earn an income, one of their only options is to apply for Social Security disability benefits.

Automatic cuts in federal spending which went into effect March 1 could increase the backlog for Social Security disability applications, according to an article published in the Christian Science Monitor on March 1. Fall River Social Security disability lawyer Deborah G. Kohl today said the backlog underscores the importance of seeking help from an attorney.

“For people who are disabled and unable to earn an income, one of their only options is to apply for Social Security disability benefits,” said Kohl, who represents people in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “As the report indicates, the government is not making it any easier for people to get their benefits in a timely fashion. An experienced disability attorney who is familiar with the system can help applicants through the process.”

The automatic, $85 billion in spending cuts known as the sequester could mean “a reduction in service hours to the public” for the Social Security Administration, the White House told the Christian Science Monitor. That would mean “a substantial growth in the backlog of Social Security disability claims,” the White House said.

Social Security disability benefits are available to people who have become disabled, and the disability is expected to last more than a year or result in death, said Kohl, a Providence RI Social Security disability attorney.

Kohl said she sympathizes with disabled people whose lives are being put on hold due to political gridlock in Washington, D.C. “People waiting to receive SSD benefits already have enough to worry about,” Kohl said. “Making people wait even longer is frustrating. Without an aggressive attorney assisting them, the process might get even longer. They might give up. Before giving up, people should talk to a competent advocate. An attorney who is familiar with the system can help guide them toward a successful result.”
