It's all about plant performance and payback.
Novato, CA (PRWEB) March 12, 2013
LumiGrow, Inc. (http://www.lumigrow.com), the market and technology leader in smart horticultural lighting, announced today that Rainbow Greenhouses, Inc. (http://www.rainbow.ca), a leading Canadian wholesale grower and distributor of potted plants, has implemented energy-efficient LumiGrow LED luminaires at its Chilliwack, British Columbia facility. Through the use of LumiGrow LED lighting, Rainbow Greenhouses is projected to reduce lighting-related energy consumption by 60% and achieve ROI within two years.
The high costs of operating conventional high intensity discharge (HID) lighting prompted the Rainbow team to assess new lighting solutions. Rainbow management selected LumiGrow LED lighting based on the science behind the technology. Unlike the broad-spectrum HID lights historically used in greenhouses, LumiGrow LED luminaires emit only those portions of the light spectrum that trigger healthy plant responses. Around the world, LumiGrow solution customers annually save an estimated 7.5 thousand megawatt hours, prevent the emission of more than 10 million tons of carbon dioxide, and return millions of dollars to their bottom lines.
“It’s inevitable. The industry is moving to LED lighting, and we want to be ahead of the pack,” stated Rainbow Greenhouses Head Grower Rob O’Hara. In explaining how the Rainbow team makes technology selections, Mr. O’Hara put it simply, “It’s all about plant performance and payback.”
LumiGrow CEO Kevin Wells added, “Rainbow Greenhouses sustains its leadership position by continually putting the best ideas and technologies into practice.” Mr. Wells continued, “We’re very pleased to partner with the expert team of growers at Rainbow.”
Rainbow Greenhouses has a track record for implementing technologies and practices that improve the environmental and financial performance of its facilities. For example, Rainbow reduces costs and conserves natural resources with a waste wood-to-biofuel heating system and an irrigation and fertilizer capture system. The Rainbow operation currently spans three locations and 36 acres. Expansion plans are underway.
