Coffee is a quick and acceptable pick-me-up and it’s easy to imagine that habits formed as students cramming for tests continue into ever more competitive educational environments.

Chef2Chef.net, a leading culinary Web portal, recently released “Smells Like Bean Spirit,” an infographic that examines the coffee drinking behavior of Americans. According to the National Coffee Association, daily coffee consumption in the United States increased by 7 percent in 2012, and Americans consume more than 350 million cups of coffee per day.
A survey from Dunkin’ Donuts and CareerBuilder indicates the American workforce runs on caffeine. Nearly half (43 percent) of respondents revealed that they believe their productivity sags if they don’t drink at least one cup of coffee at work. Sixty-two percent of 18-24 year olds believe they have to drink at least two cups per day to remain productive at work.
“Perhaps it should come as no surprise that America is a nation of coffee drinkers,” explained Rachael Fishman, spokesperson for Chef2Chef.net. “Coffee is a quick and acceptable pick-me-up and it’s easy to imagine that habits formed as students cramming for tests continue into ever more competitive educational environments.”
However, although Americans enjoy their daily cuppa joe, their addiction to the coffee bean pales in comparison to Europeans. At 54.5 pounds per capita, Luxembourg dominates the global list of annual per capita coffee consumption. Norway (29.92 pounds), Finland (27.7 pounds), Austria (17.5) and Iceland (17.38 pounds), round out the top five. Even with their 350 million cups per day habit, Americans rank twelfth, with a paltry 9.23 pounds per capita consumed each year.
