Ferrari Unveils Hybrid at Geneva Motor Show
Ferrari made history this week at the Geneva Motor Show by unveiling its hybrid car, the LaFerrari. The company’s chairman, Luca Montezemolo, noted that the design is a sign of things to come for the elite automaker, commenting, “It is an advanced laboratory for the Ferraris of tomorrow.” In an attempt to “avoid speculators,” as Mr. Montezemolo said, Ferrari will select 499 worthy buyers from a pool of inquirers that has already grown to 700, in spite of the $1.3 million sticker price. “We want real collectors of Ferrari,” Montezemolo announced to a packed media conference in Geneva. Nissan Announces Loyalty Discounts for Leaf Owners
Nissan Motor Co. announced this week that it would offer Leaf owners a $1,000 credit toward the purchase of any Nissan vehicle. The loyalty discount is good for any member of a household in which one member owns a Leaf electric car. Having already knocked $6,400 off the base price of the Leaf, Nissan appears to be raising the stakes even higher in hopes of outselling competitors and drawing positive attention to the world’s first mass-marketed electric car. Leaf’s current base price is $28,800. The company showed a 13 percent sales increase for Leaf compared to 2012 data for the same period. GM Reveals EV Intentions
General Motors’ CEO Dan Akerson announced this week that the Detroit automaker is working on a car which could achieve a 200-mile electric range on a single charge. GM hopes to have more than a half-million electrified vehicles in operation by 2017. Diesel and compressed natural gas transportation are also part of the company’s long-range plans. The Chevy Volt hybrid-electric car continues to be the premier alternative-fuel vehicle offered by a major auto manufacturer. GM is currently in a pitched battle for market share with rivals Toyota and Ford, both of whom sell popular alternative-fuel cars to an international market.
