One of Miami’s most talked about up and coming artists, R&B singer-songwriter, Cat Shell, has spoken to BEAT100.com this week after being awarded the site's most premier accolade, the Ultimate Musician Award, presented to only the most outstanding artists on the entire BEAT100 network which has hundreds of thousands of users.
The early and mid 90’s was a great musical era in its own right. Indie rock music was huge, but nothing compared to an R&B/Hip Hop scene that was enriched with quality, most notably in America. Therefore, being an American teenager at that time has proved to be very good for the life and path of Cat Shell. Influenced by the likes of Toni Braxton, TLC, Janet Jackson and Blackstreet, it takes real guts to even aspire to reach such heights herself, but just one look at her official video for the album title track, “Illusion”, on her BEAT100 profile, and everyone is bound to agree. She is every single bit the real deal and only a lack of exposure could possibly hinder her chances of becoming a major star. She writes great songs, she has natural soul in her incredible voice and she looks fantastic.
Debut album, “Illusion”, was released last year and the reviews speak for themselves as it’s a great listen. It's Toni-Braxton-meets-India-Arie-meets-TLC in its overall vibe and mix of soft and smooth R&B love ballad and groovy anthems, all played with a full band. Her music videos are also very authentic and well produced, free of all the bells and tassels so often used by R&B artists these days to deflect the listener from an unimaginative backing track, ripped from a distinctive household classic. The video for, “Illusion”, was even co-produced by Cat Shell herself.
“Because I wrote the song, I knew the story that I wanted to tell visually. I worked with Dynamite Studios production team in storyboarding the concept and putting it all together. I would love to do more videos in the near future,” she explained to BEAT100.com “I’ve grown up around music all my life as my dad was in the radio business. I was introduced to jazz and big band music at the age of five when he would sing and play his records for me in the living room. I’ve always written poetry and became a huge fan of R&B in the 90’s and started performing myself in 2008. Right now, I’m working on some live dates across America for this summer and beyond, whilst also focusing on songwriting and new material with some lighter tones – no more ‘love gone wrong’ songs. And you might even get a new music video this summer for one of my new tunes!”
Asked what advice she would give other aspiring artists trying to make their way across today’s musical landscape, she wasn’t short of wise words. “Just remember that there aren’t any shortcuts,” says Cat. “The people you see become famous have invested years of time, money and talent into their craft. Utilize your friends and family in helping you to promote and find legitimate sites like BEAT100 where you can post and share your art!”
Cat Shell plays in Miami on a regular basis at The Van Dyke Café and has also performed at other top venues including The Florida Room, B Bar, The Loews Hotel, and The Stage. You can watch the video now for her fabulous tune, “Illusion”, on the BEAT100 Ultimate Musician page now.
