History is still about the enmity that God has placed between Christ and Satan. But the central battle of the war is already over… History is now the story of His progressive victory. We must learn to act in terms of this great fact.

In his latest article, The Meaning of History, Part Two, author Bill Heid continues his examination on the role of religion in history, further illuminating the conflicts between Humanism and Scripture-based beliefs. He argues that history can only be understood when viewed as it truly is: unceasing conflict between God’s chosen people and those who reject God’s word.
Heid begins by stating that Biblical history traces back further than ancient Sumer and emphasizes God’s promise of a Savior. Thus the Bible traces the Israelites from whom the Savior was to come. He explains, “All other continents, kingdoms, and nations certainly have a place in the broader story of Creation, Fall, and Redemption, but the center of God’s story rests with Israel and the promise of the Seed.”
More than a long family story, though, Heid points out the Bible chronicles the conflicts between sinful humanity and God’s religion. While virtually every religion except Christianity suggests that salvation can be achieved on man’s own terms because man is essentially good and autonomous, Christianity teaches that humans are in dire need of God’s salvation through His grace alone because such salvation can never be earned by human works. Heid remarks that “These two … religious communions have been at war throughout all of history. The war is universal. Sometimes it is ideological. Sometimes it involves crosses, stakes, and red-hot pokers. Always it is ethical and covenantal.”
The conflict Heid describes may be seen today. Christians throughout the world are being persecuted for their beliefs. American pastor Saeed Abedini is held and being tortured for his faith in Evin prison in Tehran. He was sentenced for “threatening the national security of Iran through his leadership in Christian house churches” (http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/02/22/imprisoned-american-says-iranian-captors-waiting-for-me-to-deny-christ/).
Despite ongoing skirmishes, Heid emphasizes that God has already won the conflict through Jesus’ death and resurrection. He concludes, “History is still about the enmity that God has placed between Christ and Satan. But the central battle of the war is already over… History is now the story of His progressive victory. We must learn to act in terms of this great fact.”
