The shock revelations about horsemeat in UK food products continue to gather pace, with recent news including horsemeat traces in 'pork' meatballs and pork in alleged beef products.
Environment secretary Owen Patterson recently claimed that mislabelling – quite possibly fraudulent – was a large part of the problem. Speaking to Andrew Neil on the BBC's Sunday Politics programme, Mr Patterson said: “This is, for the moment, a labelling problem – this is an issue of fraud.”
It remains to be seen if there are any health implications from mislabelling one type of meat as another. There are, however, potentially serious consequences: some religious groups cannot eat pork, and when it comes to products such as nuts, mislabelling could have potentially fatal consequences.
Altering a label might seem like a harmless prank to a less scrupulous employee, but the results could be devastating. If you print your own labels, there are steps you can take to ensure they remain accurate.
South East Labels is a well-renowned label supplier who supply to a wide range of companies. On the topic of accurate labelling, a South East Labels spokesperson was clear:
“To ensure clear and correct labelling the biggest factor is simple – information. Not just in on the label but information about the label and indeed the product,” the spokesperson said.
“From a label manufacturer's perspective, the more information our customers can give us about their label, their product and the environment the label will be exposed to during storage and after application, the better.”
For anyone printing their own labels, South East Labels recommend using the TTP-27 Plus series desktop label printer. This printer comes with software that enables users to create their own custom label templates, with design and print packages that enable one master computer to be used to design labels and up to five others for printing only.
Greater control is thus provided over the label printing process, so that only designated staff can design or change labels. After horsemeat-gate many may be feeling labelling is best left to experts such as South East Labels.
