Replacement van needed to make food deliveries.

Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services has been relying on a 16-year-old, donated, used van to help deliver food to needy seniors in Contra Costa County. The van desperately needs replacing. The problem... the nonprofit organization does not have the money to replace the van.

To raise the money, Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services has begun a "Fund- A-Van" challenge. Everyone is invited to donate money to purchase a new food delivery van.

"The van is used 5 days a week," says Executive Director Elaine Clark. "The original van was donated by several Rotary Clubs and it has served us well. But after 16 years of daily meal delivery, the maintenance is costing us more than we can afford. The time has come to replace the vehicle."

The initial kick off of the Fund-A-Van program began at the Crab Dinner when $3,500 was collected. The organization is hoping a car dealer will help with the donation, as well as various civic groups. The van is critical to supplement the volunteer driver deliveries made daily to the 750 meal recipients.

To donate to the Fund-A-Van program, visit the website or call Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services, 925/937-8311, http://www.mowsos.org.
