"While March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month, it is still important to take care of your eyes all year long," says Dr. Tom Tooma with NVISION Laser Eye Centers.

Each day about 2,000 U.S. workers sustain job-related eye injuries that require medical treatment, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

“While March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month, it is still important to take care of your eyes all year long. Taking care of your eyes should always be a priority while you are working. Many eye injuries are irreversible and can be permanent,” says Dr. Tom Tooma, founder of NVISION Laser Eye Centers.

“There are hundreds of chemicals, machines and other miscellaneous items in the workplace that can cause eye injuries. It is important for employers to teach their employees about the different dangers that lurk in the workplace and could permanently injure their eyes,” continues Dr. Tooma.

Approximately 60 percent of workers sustaining eye injuries were not wearing proper protective eyewear, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And an estimated 90 percent of eye injuries could be prevented through the use of proper protective eyewear on the job, according to the National Eye Institute.
