ITU embodies a family dream, to create a better world through education, reaching back three generations

Dr. Shu-Park Chan founded International Technological University (ITU) to bring Silicon Valley hi-tech education to the entire globe. That dream took a major step forward when ITU was granted accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) on February 22, 2013. With Professor Chan’s recent passing, his son and ITU’s current President & CEO, Yau-Gene Chan continues the family legacy embodied in ITU’s motto, “Global Development Through Silicon Valley Education.”

“ITU embodies a family dream, to create a better world through education, reaching back three generations. That ITU was granted accreditation on the same day that my father passed away is deeply meaningful. Dad was a thorough man, I think he stayed around to make sure it happened before going,” said Yau-Gene Chan. “Achieving WASC accreditation reaffirms ITU’s commitment to the highest educational standards, and sets the stage for the University’s continued growth in achieving our global mission.”

ITU is the first WASC accredited, non-profit university based in San Jose that is recognized to grant the Ph.D., Doctor of Business Administration and Master’s degrees. City Councilmember Sam Liccardo, whose district includes the downtown where ITU is located, noted “This is a great achievement for ITU, and its mission contributes to the role of San Jose as the Capital of Silicon Valley.”

“The achievement of WASC accreditation is a tribute to the academic quality and hard work of ITU’s faculty, staff, students and trustees,” said Dr. Liz Li, Dean of Faculty and Chief Academic Officer. “The process of earning this recognition is the result of six years of strengthening our programs and three external peer-reviewed site-visits affirming ITU’s quality and achievements.” ITU’s faculty comes from top Silicon Valley engineering firms such as Google, Intel, Apple, NASA, ILM, Pixar, Disney, Oracle, Brocade among many others.

With seven departments providing hi-tech, industry-linked training, ITU offers graduate level, Master’s, Doctoral and Certificate programs in electrical engineering, computer and software engineering, engineering management, international business, interdisciplinary sciences and digital arts & animation. ITU emphasizes interdepartmental cooperation and applied research to incubate new technologies and start-ups.

In the Commission’s action letter of March 11, 2013, ITU was commended for its achievements in leadership development, financial management, faculty adequacy and roles, institutional research, and mission and strategic planning. Ralph Wolff, President of WASC, further stated that, “I particularly wish to acknowledge the significant progress that ITU has made in virtually every area of its operations in the years since you (ITU) first applied for Eligibility.” Dr. Richard Winn, Executive Director of WASC’s Senior Commission commented, “ITU is a very mission-centered institution that is driven towards executing its model of quality industry-linked education. It is a pleasure to see ITU join other WASC accredited institutions bringing quality education to our region and to the world through its outreach efforts.”
