A service contract is where a service is officially defined. A service-level agreement is at times used to refer the contracted delivery time. To cite, Internet service providers will make service level agreements within the terms of their contracts with customers to describe the level of service. In such cases, the SLA will have a procedural definition.
The service-level agreement is an agreement between two parties, which is done under negotiation. The agreement could be lawfully binding. Internal department associations are one example. A contract between the service provider and third party are generally called SLAs because the level of service is set by the customer; there will not be any sort of agreement between the third parties. These are operational level agreements.
The SLA upholds a general understanding regarding services, responsibilities, guarantees and warranties. The level of service has to be made clear in every area. The SLA may indicate the levels of serviceability, availability, presentation, function and other aspects of service. The levels can be classified as a target and minimum, which will give an idea to the customer of what he can expect. Penalties may be worked out in some contracts in cases of refusal of the SLA. The prime importance is the services the customer receives and not the service that the service provider delivers.
In common cases, the SLA include divisions that include the definition of services, performance, problem assessment, duties of customer, warranties, tackling of disaster and termination of the agreement. There is a provision for re-validation in order to make changes based on new information.
From 1980s onwards, the telecom sector made use of SLAs as part of their contracts with customers in the corporate sector. The practice gained momentum in the course of time, and now it has become so common for a customer to engage a service provider by involving in a service-level agreement in an array of service contracts with all sort of industries.
The service- level agreements are based on the output and the service the customer receives is the result of the agreement. The service provider can display their value by demonstrating their skill, ability and knowledge, which will assure the customer that they will receive the required service.
Different types of SLAs are defined at various levels.
