Bellucci Premium Warns Consumers of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Shortage

In response to an article published by the Yahoo! News, which details the recent olive oil shortage, Bellucci Premium assures consumers they have not suffered extreme losses and will continue to provide quality extra virgin olive oil.

On March 13, Natalie Sexenian, Marketing Manager for extra virgin olive oil producer Bellucci Premium, responds to an article published on Yahoo! News about the worldwide olive oil shortage.

According to Yahoo! News, last spring, during olive flowering season, Spain suffered a late frost causing Spanish olive trees to grow fewer olives at a smaller size, impacting olive oil production. Olive farmers in Italy, Greece and the Near East also suffered drought, but Spain was hit the hardest, olive oil production dropping 60 percent, reports Yahoo! News.

The global lack of olive oil is expected to raise prices, reports Yahoo! News. Corruption of extra virgin olive oil could also increase.

Sexenian says Spain’s misfortune could have a direct effect on the increase of fraudulent olive oil. “The shortage could force restaurants and manufacturers to mix olive oil with cheaper oils,” she says. “Some manufacturers were caught mixing their olive oil with sunflower or coconut oils, but did not reveal this on the label.”

Sexenian says Bellucci Premium says the shortage could be better for business. “We pride ourselves on producing 100% traceable extra virgin olive oil,” she says. “We don’t contaminate our olive oil by using cheaper substitutes. I encourage consumers to read labels carefully.”

Olive oil is a great asset for cooking healthy meals, but purity plays a vital role in health benefits Sexenian says. “There is a lot of evidence supporting the health advantages of consuming olive oil,” she says. “However, you can only take advantage of the full health benefits if it’s true extra virgin olive oil. Consumers need to make sure the oil they consume is not counterfeit.”
