On March 14, Natalie Sexenian, Marketing Manager for Italian olive oil company Bellucci Premium, comments on an article published by the Olive Oil Times, which details a new software program designed to classify olive oil.
According to Olive Oil Times, a research group from the University of Jaen in Spain invented a new software program that can evaluate and judge extra virgin olive oils. Researchers partnered with leading olive oil technology company Citoliva, CM Europe SL Laboratories and MENGISOFT, a computer engineering company. The new software was designed to improve the sensory evaluation process of extra virgin olive oils by saving time and money.
Sexenian says this invention is a great asset for the industry. “It will make the process a lot easier,” she says. “Tasters will be able to make clear distinctions between Italian olive oil quality and classification when using this software. It’s definitely a process that could be improved by the use of this technology.”
According to Olive Oil Times, “The software will function by streamlining the process of olive oil evaluation, allowing the individual monitoring of the evolution of different tasters for different samples and sessions in real time. Interventions to correct deviations of organoleptic properties can then be carried out by the chief of the panel.”
Sexenian says the software could really help keep the standard of olive oil high. “The evaluation and classification of olive oil is something the industry takes very seriously, especially with the amount of counterfeit oils on the market,” she says. “This software will be able to tell if the oil is up to par with International Olive Council Standards in terms of taste and composure. Tasters can make sure products are the best they can be and companies can market their oils more efficiently.”
