On March 19, Lorna Kleidman, a fitness expert and world champion in the sport of kettlebells, issues a comment following the publication of an article from USA Today on an overweight family that is pulling together to get in shape.
Ashley Stewart is from Montgomery, Alabama – an area that known for its population's high rate of obesity – and her family joins the ranks of Alabama citizens that are out of shape. But when her dad was rushed to the hospital and almost went into a diabetic coma due to high blood sugar, the family had a serious wake-up call. Stewart said that for years, her family ate “whatever we wanted whenever we wanted to eat it,” and that their exercise habits were “almost nonexistent.”
The article reports that as a result of their lifestyle, many of Stewart's family members had medical issues “related to their excess weight.” These included sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and diabetes. Now, the family is taking part in the Family Fitness Challenge, which is an initiative to help families get in better shape. Of the over 400 families that applied to take part in the challenge, only six were chosen.
“Exercising in groups – especially close friends and family – is one of the most effective ways to make sure you stick with a workout regimen,” says Lorna Kleidman, who frequently works with fitness beginners in her kettlebells training program, KettleX. “You can support each other and keep each other in check.”
After Ashley’s family was chosen to take part in the challenge, they were paired with a fitness expert and dietician. Since starting the program, they have collectively lost over 60 pounds. “They've gone from eating fried chicken to fish tacos. They've progressed from doing almost no exercise to training for a 5K in late March,” according to the article.
Kleidman recommends kettlebells as a great way to get on the road to better fitness, saying, “They’re easy to use, even for beginners, and most importantly they’re effective for enhancing core strength, which is vital for anyone looking to shed pounds and maintain their health.” Kleidman went on to say that kettlebells are great for group exercises. She applauds the Family Fitness Challenge for encouraging people across the country to take up a healthier lifestyle through diet and exercise.
