False whiplash claims are putting a huge strain on motor insurance premiums and driving them up year on year.
(PRWEB UK) 16 March 2013
According to recent news in The Telegraph, The Association of British Insurers has called for medical assessments of whiplash claims to be carried out by doctors approved by a special board to curb the UK’s whiplash epidemic.
Whiplash claims add an estimated £90 a year to the average motor insurance premium and an estimated 70% of road accident personal injury claims are for whiplash in the UK. This is compared to just 47% in Germany, 32% in Spain and 3% in France.
The ABI is suggesting that whiplash claims should be assessed by approved medical experts who would have to show financial independence from claimant solicitors and take into account the circumstances of the collision rather than the claimant’s reported symptoms.
The proposals were submitted as part of a Ministry of Justice Consultation into whiplash claims which closed last week.
A spokesperson from Cost.co.uk said:
"At Cost, we aim to help people find cheap car insurance deals by comparing providers but false whiplash claims are putting a huge strain on motor insurance premiums and driving them up year on year. Faking an insurance claim is illegal and will invalidate your policy, so don’t be tempted to trick the system. If these changes are introduced, hopefully we’ll see cheaper insurance premiums and this whiplash epidemic conquered.
"With the results of the consultation into whiplash claims to be published in coming months, we hope some kind of solution is found to combat these false claims."
