Resilience is not reserved for superheroes operating in extreme circumstances – it’s something we all have to some degree, and something we need in our everyday lives and work.

Employers who want to create a strong and effective team should focus on building resilience, according to Dr. Jill Flint-Taylor.

Resilience can help individuals, organisations and teams cope with problems, and grow successfully by resolving and learning from them.

She said: "As someone who’s been involved in resilience development for many years, I find now more than ever I’m asked 'What do you mean by resilience?'”

"Resilience is not reserved for superheroes operating in extreme circumstances – it’s something we all have to some degree, and something we need in our everyday lives and work.

"Most importantly, resilience is developed through experiencing and tackling stressful situations – anyone can build their resilience in this way, and it’s also worth remembering that avoiding such situations can seriously undermine resilience."

Talking about team resilience development, she makes the point that many people think the best way to build it is by focussing on helping each individual in the team - rather than the unit as a collective.

She said: "We take a different view of team resilience. Certainly, helping individuals boost their personal resilience is always a good thing, but we believe the emphasis should be on creating the right climate and conditions – equipping the team as a whole to bounce back and thrive under pressure in the process."

Dr Flint-Taylor has recently joined Find the Edge's panel of experts, and will be contributing further articles explaining how to build resilience into everything from individuals through to company processes.

As a business psychologist, she has worked alongside many multinational organisations, and written numerous research papers in the field of resilience. More about her can be found here: http://www.findtheedge.co.uk/expert-panelist/jill-flint-taylor.
