On March15, Yumi Media, a food website devoted to delivering the latest and greatest in food news, recipes, and products to incorporate into your own healthy lifestyle, responds to a proposed American ban on horse slaughtering for meat consumption.
According to the Wall Street Journal, “with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and animal-rights groups, a bipartisan group in Congress is pursuing legislation that would stop the operation of proposed slaughtering facilities, including one by Valley Meat Co. in Roswell, N.M., that hopes to soon begin producing meat to export for human consumption.”
The Wall Street Journal reports the bill would block the U.S. from exporting the animals for slaughter to its neighbor nations Mexico and Canada. According to the Wall Street Journal, approximately 170,000 horses were sent to slaughter in those countries in 2012.
"We will find any means appropriate to try to get its passage," said Sen. Mary Landrieu (D., La.), of the ban. Lendrieu is one of its sponsors, according to the article.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Congress’ actions come as European companies have pulled food from store shelves after traces of horse meat were found in products marked as beef.
“The horsemeat controversy has a lot of people shaken,” comments Justin Maas, Yumi Media spokesperson. “Quorn complaints have given some people a fear of trying meat alternatives, which is absurd. Now, this horsemeat scandal has given people a real and legitimate fear of eating meat. Quorn offers a suitable alternative to eating meat that anyone can trust.”
