Obsidian Analysis, Inc. announced today that James E. Harris, Jr. has joined the firm as a Senior Specialist for Cybersecurity. Mr. Harris will serve as part of Obsidian’s senior management team directing cybersecurity and business resilience programs. Following on Obsidian’s successful conclusion of National Level Exercise 2012 – the first nationwide cyber exercise – Harris will provide world class cybersecurity expertise to projects for private sector, Federal, and state government customers.
Mr. Harris brings to Obsidian considerable expertise in cyber and digital forensic investigations, cyber defense, law enforcement, and information technology. Most recently, Mr. Harris was the Assistant Section Chief for the FBI Counterterrorism Internet Operations Section in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he managed online terrorism investigations with the US intelligence community and international partners. Over the course of his FBI career, Harris utilized his IT industry background and technical expertise to play an important role in the FBI’s evolving mission countering cybercrime, cyber terrorism, and state sponsored cyber activities. Recognizing the importance of government and industry partnership in protecting our nation’s critical infrastructure, he also served as the FBI Cyber Division Liaison to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) and the United States Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT).
“Protecting electronic information against increasingly complex threats is a fundamental challenge to decision makers in the private sector and government. Jim Harris will help Obsidian support our customers by bringing outstanding experience with the technical challenges of cybersecurity as well as an understanding of the needs of senior leaders in government and the private sector,” stated Dr. Kevin O’Prey, Obsidian’s President. “Through his vast experience with the FBI and IT industry, Jim possesses the technical expertise necessary to analyze complex cyber problems and to develop practical solutions.”
In the past, Mr. Harris has teamed with counterparts in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, Brazil, and other countries to combat significant cyber threats. He successfully investigated and managed teams that investigated terrorist use of the internet, criminal and counterintelligence computer intrusions, Internet child exploitation, intellectual property rights and trade secret violations, Internet fraud schemes, white collar crimes, and violent crimes.
Prior to his tenure with the FBI, Mr. Harris worked in the IT industry, first with the IBM Corporation in North Carolina and then Silicon Image, Inc. in Sunnyvale, CA. At both stops, he honed his technical skills, and developed a keen understanding of the trajectory of the IT industry, eventually developing and receiving U.S. patents for computer hardware. Mr. Harris was also a co-founder of the Digital Display Working Group, and helped write the specification for the DVI interface commonly found on computer systems today.
“Information Security is a complex field, requiring a deep understanding of policy, law, and technology. Obsidian’s commitment to preparedness in cybersecurity, along with their high-quality work makes me excited to join the firm,” said Mr. Harris. “Obsidian does not shy away from the complex issues in cybersecurity facing our business and government leaders, which is why I look forward to joining them in shaping the process towards solutions.”
