(Infantile colic) is the most common reason why parents consult pediatricians during their baby’s first 16 weeks.

Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin Chiropractor and Naturopath Dr. J G Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP notes that infantile colic affects about one in every six families. It is the most common reason why parents consult pediatricians during their baby’s first 16 weeks. Not only are the symptoms of infantile colic distressing for the baby, but the excessive crying is stressful for the parents. Doctors feel compelled to assist in easing the stress on the family, even though colic is considered a self-limiting problem. Most cases resolve within six months, though some studies indicate longer-lasting effects on the children. England’s National Health Service estimated that it paid over £65 million ($104 million US) for treating infantile colic in 2001.
There are many personal accounts, along with case reports, of the benefits of Chiropractic manipulation in reducing the severity of infantile colic symptoms. The question is: is there any solid scientific evidence for using Chiropractic in treating these children?
Dobson et al. identified six studies representing 325 infants with infantile colic. Their study, Manipulative Therapies for Infantile Colic, was published in the December 2012 issue of the Cochrane Database Systematic Review. Five of the six studies indicated beneficial effects from spinal and/or cranial manipulation. While measured daily crying times were decreased by an average of 72 minutes daily and there was a statistically significant improvement in sleeping time, there was not a total elimination of symptoms shown in any of the studies. The sixth study found no benefit from manipulative care for infantile colic; however, methodological flaws appeared to be in this study when compared to the other five. One of the studies also looked at adverse events from treatment, and found none.
These studies indicate that gentle, low velocity, low amplitude manipulation such as used by Chiropractors and Osteopaths, appear to safely reduce the symptoms of infantile colic, especially excessive crying time. Further studies with a larger sample of infants in blinded studies (neither participants nor those assessing outcomes know whether the infant received treatment) are indicated in order to better understand the benefits of manipulative therapy.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association has been publishing research on the benefits of Chiropractic care for not only infantile colic, but also for the successful treatment of conditions as diverse as bedwetting, asthma, chronic ear infections, allergies, headaches, migraines, scoliosis, ADHD, autism, torticollis, and many other health conditions. When these conditions are caused by interference in the nervous system, excellent results are seen with Chiropractic care. Often, these conditions are multi-factorial, and the patient will benefit by having a Chiropractor as the leader of a team in treating the patient with its focus on the nervous system.
Kentuckiana Children’s Center in Louisville, Kentucky is an example of the cooperative treatment of disadvantaged children centering on Chiropractic care with assistance from dentists, optometrists, and medical doctors. The center has an ongoing research program in caring for the needs of challenged children through Chiropractic care.
These research studies show many benefits to Chiropractic care beyond just the treatment of pain.
