Food Safety Testing with the Charm II

The Charm II system is a good choice for regional laboratories because it can test so many different foods.

A Charm II food residue testing system was installed at the National Center for Nuclear Science and Technology in Tunisia on January 28th. Technicians were trained to test multiple foods for antibiotic and/or pesticide residues. Installation of the Charm II is part of a broader effort to create at least five world-class, regional, regulatory laboratories for foods, drugs, medicines, cosmetics, and services throughout Africa.

“The Charm II system is a good choice for regional laboratories because it can test so many different foods,” says Wilbert Kokke, Charm EMEA Manager. During the three-day training session, participants gained hands on experience testing milk, chicken, eggs, and fish. Six of the ten participants were part of the team that will use the Charm II to test foods in the Tunisian region. Additional participants were from reference laboratories located in Algeria, Egypt, Cameroon, and Nigeria.

The Charm II uses radioimmunoassay tests to detect antibiotics, pesticides, and other contaminants in foods, ensuring public safety. Protocols are straightforward, and, after extraction, samples can be screened in minutes. Food products with negative results can be quickly cleared for importation, exportation, or other uses.

This installation and training session is the second held by Charm Sciences in Africa in recent months. In August 2012, Charm installed a Charm II system and trained technicians in Tanzania. Procurement of the Charm II system was supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) technical cooperation project.
