File extension MOD, MOV, and MP4 can be associated with a variety of different file types one of which is a video file type. Taking into account that video files are comprised of different elements such as codecs, titles, subtitles, playlists, audio files, project files etc which are used to open and play video using a variety of applications, Avanquest recently published recommendations on the main types of software to open MOD, MOV, and MP4 files.

File extension MOD is a video file type that is classified as a camcorder recorded video file which is created using a JVC EVERIO camcorder device. MOD files can also be created with specific models of Canon and Panasonic camcorders. The contents of a MOD file are in an MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 compressed format.

File extension MOV is one of the most common video file formats and can be used with a variety of different applications and operating systems. MOV files contain movie and video files and use an algorithm in a proprietary compressed format.

File extension MP4 is a video file format which is based on a standard created by the Moving Pictures Expert Group hence the reason the file is also identified as an MPEG-4 file. MP4 files use different types of compression to store video and audio such as AAC for audio and MPEG-4 compression for video.

There is a variety of different software applications which are capable of opening and playing file extension MOD, MOV, and MP4. Additionally, there are a number of applications that provide tools for viewing and editing the contents of different video formats.

Roxio: File extension MOV and MP4 can be opened using Roxio which provides a version for both the Windows operating system and Mac OS X. For a Windows-based PC, Roxio Creator NXT Pro can be used. It is an audio enhancement application available as a paid download on the Roxio website. For Mac OS X, Roxio Popcorn 4 or Roxio Toast 11 can be used.

QuickTime Player: Apple QuickTime Player will open and play video files with extension MOV and MP4. QuickTime Player is compatible with the Windows operating system and Mac OS X and is available as an unpaid download on the Apple website. QuickTime Player is also available on the same website as a paid version which offers more option for playing movies and videos.

VLC Media Player: VLC Media Player is a multiplatform application that will open and play file extension MOV and MP4. VLC Media Player is open source and is available as an unpaid download on the VideoLAN website. VLC Media Player is multiplatform and compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, or the Linux operating system.

Everio Utility: File extension MOD can be opened using the JVC Everio Utility which is a freeware application available for download on the CNET website. JVC Everio Utility is compatible with the Windows operating system and can be used to export MOD files to another format for use with a wider variety of video applications.

PowerDirector: CyberLink Power Director 11 is an application that allows creating professional looking home videos. The application is capable of opening file extension MOD and is compatible with the Windows operating system. PowerDirector 11 is available in a trial version on the CyberLink website.

Mobile Media Converter: MIKSOFT Mobile Media Converter is an unpaid audio and video converter which is multiplatform and compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, and the Linux operating system. Mobile Media Converter is available on the MIKSOFT website and also provides tools for viewing and editing video and audio clips.

Flash Professional CS6: Adobe Flash Professional which is part of the CS6 Creative Suite of applications is a professional program will open and edit file extension MP4. Flash Professional can be obtained as a trial on the Adobe website and is compatible with Windows and Mac OS X.

These are a few of the software applications recommended by Avanquest to open MOD, MOV, and MP4 files.
