“After five years of providing EPS for newly constructed homes, it is wonderful to see this milestone reached in the existing homes market.” —David Heslam, Executive Director, Earth Advantage
Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) March 19, 2013
EPS, an energy performance scoring tool brought to the market by Energy Trust of Oregon, is similar to the miles-per-gallon rating used on automobiles. EPS provides homeowners with a clear picture of their home’s estimated energy efficiency, energy costs and carbon footprint, before and after home energy improvements. Today’s announcement marks a milestone in the home energy retrofit market and EAI’s CakeSystems software.
David Heslam, newly appointed executive director at Earth Advantage and the previous project lead on the development of CakeSystems commented, “After five years of providing EPS for newly constructed homes, it is wonderful to see this milestone reached in the existing homes market.” EA is gaining more and more customers for its CakeSystems software and hopes the future will bring greater adoption for metrics like the EPS. Heslam went on to say, “We have worked closely with Clean Energy Works Oregon, Energy Trust and organizations like the Home Performance Guild to make sure EPS can be delivered to the existing homes market in Oregon. If we are to dramatically increase the energy efficiency of our nation’s existing building stock we will need a meaningful standard from which homeowners, utilities, municipalities and energy efficiency programs can work. The Pacific Northwest is proving to be a leader in that effort.”
Energy Trust is currently evaluating the benefit of applying EPS to existing homes, and anticipates that 500-1000 existing homes will receive an EPS during the evaluation period as part of a comprehensive home assessment delivered by a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR contractor. The Energy Trust trade ally contractors have licensed CakeSystems software to deliver a score sheet and report to the homeowner so they can easily understand their home’s estimated energy costs and carbon footprint.
This first EPS for an existing home was issued by Mitt Jones, co-owner and president of Sensible Energy Solutions to a homeowner who had recently completed a whole home energy retrofit through Clean Energy Works Oregon. Mr. Jones said of EPS, “Because of their advantages both for homeowners and for home performance businesses such as ours, we intend to fully integrate EPS and CakeSystems software into our energy auditing processes." CEWO recently signed a licensing contract to use CakeSystems software to implement the EPS throughout their territory. Tim Miller, CEWO’s chief operating officer said of the EPS “We're excited to cross this milestone and look forward to Clean Energy Works' customers comparing their home's Energy Performance Score to that of their friends and neighbors. Along with their homes being more comfortable and affordable, customers now have a quantifiable and intuitive measure of their home's improved energy efficiency.”
Energy Trust has been applying EPS to new homes in Oregon after a 2008 pilot report revealed that the SIMPLE algorithm developed by the energy expert Michael Blasnik offered the best solution to residential energy performance evaluation. The report led Earth Advantage to develop its now widespread energy modeling software CakeSystems. Diane Ferington, residential sector lead at Energy Trust said, “With the use of Earth Advantage’s CakeSystems software, Energy Trust trade ally contractors are able to deliver streamlined information to help homeowners make informed and effective upgrades to their home’s energy efficiency."
