On March 21, Colle Farmers Market issues a statement commending North Carolina’s 10% Farm to Fork Campaign. According to an article from the Sanford Herald, the campaign is encouraging people to spend 10 percent of their food bills on local vegetables to support the local farming community.

“North Carolinians spend about $35 billion a year on food. If each person spent just 10 percent on food locally — roughly $1.05 per day — then approximately $3.5 billion would be available in the state’s economy,” according to the article. And the 10% Farm to Fork Campaign is aiming to do just that.

People that enroll in the program will be sent weekly e-mail reminders to report on how much they are spending on local vegetables and other produce. The campaign is not just for private citizens; businesses are also eligible, reports the article. Not only will it create jobs and give money to local farmers, the initiative will also encourage people to have a healthier diet, reducing health-care related expenses in the state.

Colle, the online directory of organic farmers markets, applauds the campaign, saying that more states need to implement programs like it to support local farms. The company adds that people who enroll in the program should be sure to check out local farmers markets, where they can find all-local produce.

The article goes on to mention the Sandhills Farm to Table Cooperative. According to the article, “by joining the Co-op and subscribing, you can receive weekly, or every other week, a variety box of fresh local produce. Each box will have around 10 pounds of produce to include at least two varieties of fruits and six of vegetables.”

Colle responds to the co-op by saying that this is another great way to take part in the 10% Farm to Fork Campaign, especially for those people that do not have the time to go to a local farmers market.

Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all people who are living an organic and natural lifestyle.
