One of the reasons the GHSA says the numbers are going up is because there are more teens on the road, period.

Teen drivers face increased risks on the road, with new nationwide statistics showing a 19% increase in the number of fatal wrecks among teens since last year. Michael Steinger, a West Palm Beach car accident lawyer and victims' advocate, says the danger also translates to legal risks for teens and their parents.

The numbers, which come from a report from the Governors' Highway Safety Association (GHSA), show a continued trend of increased fatalities since 2011. The numbers reflect drivers age 16-19.

While some have been quick to blame the trend on risky driving behavior, Steinger says teens aren't always at fault – and parents should know their legal rights.

“One of the reasons the GHSA says the numbers are going up is because there are more teens on the road, period,” Steinger said. “With the economic recovery, teens have more access to vehicles and are working more. That exposes more teens to the dangers of a traffic accident.”

Attorney Michael Steinger states that when a teen is injured in a car accident, many parents don't know what to do – and may give up their legal options.

“Teens are inexperienced drivers and it's normal for them, or the parent, to apologize to the other party. But that looks like accepting blame. Until you know what happened, don't comment on the accident – you might be making it harder to fight for compensation later.”

“The best thing to do after an accident is to record all the details and talk to a lawyer,” Steinger says.

“Don't give up your rights,” he said. “Teens are vulnerable because they don't know how insurance or legal matters work. Talk to your teen about what to do if they're ever in an accident.”
