California-based canopy distributor and manufacturer Ace Canopy has decided to move the majority of their business operations and distribution to Texas. The decision was based on several factors, including state income tax and various California business logistics. Ace Canopy makes pop-up tents, party and various other types of canopy shelters. The party tents in particular are very heavy, which makes shipping them very costly. One of the decisions to move to the Lone Star State was location. The savings on shipping these heavy items from the center of the country is substantial. Texas also does not have state income tax. California’s maximum state income tax is currently 10.3%. Ace Canopy will keep its retail store in Palmdale, California, where its headquarters are currently based but 90% of the business will be moving too Weir Texas, which is 20 miles North of Austin. The canopy company still has plans to expand more retail stores in California, but will place the majority of operations in Texas.

Ace Canopy general manager Angelina Urquhart stated, “We are very excited about moving Ace Canopy to Texas. We are sad that the majority of our business will be leaving California but the savings on state income tax and shipping heavy canopies and tents from the center of the country alone will be substantial for the growth of our company.”

The new canopy and tent facility in Texas is currently being built. The buildout will consist of a 25,000 ft.² warehouse, 5000 ft.² retail store and 4000 ft.² office. Ace says that the company is looking forward to collaborating with the local agricultural and trucking industries to expand their product line for the region’s interest. One canopy in particular has already shown popularity and that is the heavy duty outdoor canopy 10 x 20. Many residents have bought these canopies to protect their cars against hailstorms, which are a regular occurrence for people in the region, during spring and summer time.
Ace says that the new facility will be completed by the end of the summer of 2013.
