PALM HARBOR, FL (PRWEB) March 25, 2013
The Team Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce will join the fight against cancer for the tenth consecutive year at the Relay For Life of Palm Harbor event, to be held on April 12, 2013, at Palm Harbor University High School. Relay For Life of Palm Harbor raised over $75,000 in 2012, and Team Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce aims to help beat that number this year. With its dedicated, active members, the Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce takes its community service seriously.
The Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce is an influential force in local government and economic development, and plans to promote, advocate and educate residents about the upcoming Relay For Life event. The Team Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce currently comprises 13 members, some of whom are cancer survivors themselves.
Relay For Life is a global awareness event started by the American Cancer Society to bring recognition to the impact of cancer and raise funds to find a cure for the disease. Participants form teams, camp out overnight and take turns doing laps around a track to raise donations. Because cancer never sleeps, Relay events last up to 24 hours, and each team is required to have at least one member on the track at all times.
Having attended Relay For Life since 2004, the Chamber team already has a plan to raise funds. This year’s pre-event fundraisers included a car wash and selling cancer survivor bracelets. A dunk tank, Chik-Fil-A food, auctions, dance contest and other fundraising will also be held on site to continue raising donations throughout the event.
Connie Davis, team captain and CEO of the Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce, is determined to make a difference in the devastation that cancer brings. “We need to do all that we can for cancer awareness and support in our community,” Davis commented. “Cancer has touched the lives of my family and friends, and I hope that with our continued efforts and funding, a cure will be found.”
All proceeds from Relay For Life of Palm Harbor will be used to benefit local cancer patients and the families of those who have lost a loved one to cancer.
Relay For Life of Palm Harbor currently has 21 teams and 177 participants, and has raised over $26,000. The number of participants is expected to grow even more in upcoming weeks.

About Relay For Life:
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature volunteer-driven fundraising event. Relay For Life began in 1985 when colorectal surgeon Dr. Gordon Klatt decided to raise money for the American Cancer Society in honor of his patients by walking around a track over a 24 hour period. Today, Relay For Life events are held in more than 5,000 communities spanning 21 countries, and have raised an estimated $3 billion+. All proceeds go to funding cancer research, with the aim of eradicating the disease. In addition to fundraising, the event raises awareness of the disease and furthers the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, helping them get well, finding cures and fighting back. More information on Relay For Life is available at http://www.relayforlife.org.
