A recent article published in New You magazine highlights nine factors that may cause premature aging. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills says the list offers some good suggestions but not all have a solid scientific basis.

An article published in the April 2013 edition of New You Magazine points to nine lesser known factors that may cause premature aging of the skin. Laser skin resurfacing and Botox are popular treatments for reversing the visible signs of aging.

“I wouldn’t suggest every item on this list to my patients,” says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. “I certainly insist that my patients use sun block every day but I’m not about to tell them to stay away from straws or recommend wrinkle reducing pillows.”

A poor sex life can lead to premature signs of aging. Having a healthy sex life may minimize risk of stroke, heart problems, and autoimmune diseases. Having sex twice a week, the report suggests, can help reduce stress and visual signs of aging.

Sitting in the sun or in front of an open fire or a radiant source of heat can damage your skin. To avoid aging, the article and Dr. Ourian suggest using sun block daily and staying out of the sun as much as possible.

New You also points out that low-fat, high-carb and fad diets may lead to rapid weight loss and equally rapid weight gain after the diet ends. This can affect the elasticity of the skin and lead to premature aging.

Even sipping drinks through a straw is considered potential causes of the visual signs of aging. Excessive usage of a straw can result in hardening of facial muscles and creasing of the lips.

The article also highlights low quality cosmetics and over-exercising as potential causes of premature aging. Rough and dirty brushes can make one look aged. Additionally, plastic surgery experts believe that excessive exercising can lead to facial wasting, a condition where one will look tired and old despite being at the peak of your fitness.

“Magazines love to publish lists,” concludes Dr. Ourian, “and in this case there’s some real value in some of the list items. Protect yourself from the sun, get proper rest, and stay from yo-yo dieting are all suggestions I can endorse.”

Dr. Ourian has been a pioneer in laser technology and non-invasive aesthetic procedures including Restylane, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra. These treatments are used for the correction or reversal of a variety of conditions such as acne, acne scars, skin discoloration, wrinkles, stretch marks, varicose veins, cellulite, and others.
