Private Investigators comment on the importance of keeping safe from crime online in light of recent BBC News article dated 22nd March 2013

Keeping safe online can be something that vulnerable people do not think about doing

According to the recent BBC News article one of the biggest UK online dating companies has seen its shares dropping after announcing an audit into the way it operates. Internet surfers who spoke to a BBC investigation last month said they had lots of messages when they first signed up to the sites as free users but once they paid up the interest rapidly petered out.

The report goes on to say that the company denied it was creating its own user profiles on its websites and claimed there were staff profiles to monitor chat rooms and forums. However, blogger, John Hempton of Bronte Capital revealed he set up a fake profile of a very undesirable male, headed “Fat, lazy poor sick guy wants support” on a Cupid plc site to see what response he would get and he was surprised to receive as many as 50 age-appropriate and good looking women who wanted to talk with him and about 190 emails

Private Investigators are often approached by individuals that believe they have been scammed online in some way. This can include dating websites, social networking sites and by receiving random emails from bogus individuals. Vulnerable people are targeted by criminals online as they are easily conned into parting with money. Private Investigators can investigate these situations and have had great success in the past. Once an investigation has taken place the client is given help and advice in keeping safe online in the future.

Spokesperson from Private Investigators, Ashlea Peters said:
“Keeping safe online can be something that vulnerable people do not think about doing. In my professional opinion everyone who purchases equipment, where they can access the internet, should be given help and advice in ways to keep safe online “
