The event, which takes place annually, was set up in 2007 to provoke people into thinking more about their impact on the environment. It has been reported in The Guardian that Sunday 24th March saw cities across the world turn off their lights for the cause. Famous landmarks taking part included the Eiffel Tower, Times Square and the Houses of Parliament. More than a million participants were said to have joined in the hour which ran from 8.30p.m. until 9.30p.m. local time in each country. Environmental Group WWF says Earth Hour has become the world’s largest demonstration of support for action on carbon emissions.
