MidKent College principal and chief executive Stephen Grix has been selected as a finalist in the Director of the Year Awards.

Mr Grix is nominated in the ‘large company’ category of the awards, which celebrate the best in UK business and are run by the Institute of Directors.

The presentation ceremony takes place at the Landmark Hotel, London, on Friday, 19 April.

Mr Grix said: “I am extremely proud to have been nominated for this award, which is recognition for all the hard work put in by MidKent College staff every day.

“We have invested a lot of money in our facilities and workforce despite tough economic times, ensuring we continue to grow and improve for the benefit of our students and local employers.

“The ongoing £23 million refurbishment of our Maidstone Campus, which follows the opening of our £86m Medway Campus in 2009, shows MidKent College is not one to rest on its laurels.”

Mr Grix first joined MidKent College as a 15-year-old bricklaying student having left school with no qualifications.

He returned as principal/chief executive in 2005, helping transform the College into one of the biggest and best providers of further and higher education in the country.

The current academic year will be Mr Grix’s last as principal following his decision to step down in the summer. However, he will continue as chief executive on a part-time basis until 2015.
