Coming-of-Age memoir by Canadian author Savannah Grace is first book in a new series reflecting on an adolescence experienced around the world.

“We learned to adapt to new circumstances every day, whether it was nibbling roasted duck tongues in China or being stranded in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert.”

"Sihpromatum — I Grew My Boobs in China," the first in a new series of books by author Savannah Grace about her unique coming of age experience traveling the world, is now available online at Amazon.com and Kobo.com. In Sihpromatum, Vancouver-born Grace reflects about her childhood and adolescence as part of an adventurous Canadian family that, despite her strong objections, takes on a nomadic lifestyle when Grace is only 14 years old. In the four ensuing years of backpacking through over 80 countries around the world, Grace kept an in-depth daily journal, which is now the basis of the memoir series.

Written from Grace’s then-adolescent perspective as an initially reluctant traveler, the stories recounted in Sihpromatum blend memoir and travel adventure, with a heavy dose of humor and an exploration of an unusual family dynamic. Grace chronicles her time in Mongolia and China as she tries to make sense of the exotic new cultures around her (as well as the dramatic changes happening to her own body). As her family veers more and more off the beaten path and finds itself in all kinds of exciting scenarios, Grace slowly begins to appreciate the lifestyle that’s been thrust upon her. (“Sihpromatum,” a word young Grace makes up, means “a blessing that initially appears to be a curse.”) A cross between Judy Blume and Elizabeth Gilbert, Grace brings wit, child-like curiosity and a sense of wonder to her first full-length book.

“Some of the lessons I learned could probably never have been taught in a classroom,” says Grace, who is self-publishing the book series. “We learned to adapt to new circumstances every day, whether it was nibbling roasted duck tongues in China or being stranded in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert.”

The youngest member of a very adventurous Canadian family, Savannah Grace visited 30 U.S. states by the age of seven. At 14, she was pulled out of school to travel the world before returning home to Vancouver four years later to graduate from high school. Now 22, Savannah has traveled to nearly 100 countries on five continents and completed her first book, Sihpromatum - I Grew My Boobs in China. She is currently living with her Dutch partner in The Netherlands, where she continues to write and travel.
