Kyle Gholston, Vice President at Conexus, was the featured presenter at the National Association of Purchasing Managers’ (NAPM) monthly meeting in Tulsa on Tuesday, March 12th. He spoke on Changing the Face of Logistics, a Peek Around the Corner. Topics covered included various societal, economic and political factors affecting the transportation industry and supply chain in today’s tumultuous business climate.

“There are many challenges facing the transportation and supply chain industries as a whole,” said Gholston who talked about hot topics such as near shoring, tightening capacity, the ever-increasing driver shortage and the highly-disputed Transportation Bill, recently signed by the President which, among other things, increases the cost of Surety Bonds to $75,000 from $10,000. Gholston spoke about what the changing regulations mean for transportation companies such as 3PLs and how those changes will affect shippers.

“The value of goods shipped across the U.S.-Mexican border by truck hit an all-time high in May 2012. Surprised?” asked Gholston of his audience of purchasing managers. Gholston went on to discuss the increasing concern over the nationwide driver shortage as the economy recovers from its recent decline. “The average U.S. truck driver today is 48 years old,” said Gholston. “Transportation providers in 2013 have to compete with construction companies for drivers young and old who are more likely to take a job in construction because of the lower risk and close proximity to home. It’s not unlikely for HR departments at transportation companies to go through nearly 1,000 individuals before finding just one qualified driver.”
