This tool will help veterans get a foot in the door, setting them up for future success.

With our troops continuing to return from overseas, many are finding that the end of their deployment marks the beginning of a new set of challenges. And as evidenced by recent veteran employment numbers, finding civilian work is chief among them. To help turn the trend around, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce commissioned D.C. marketing agency iostudio to develop the Personal Branding Resume Engine, a unique resume building and career assistance website for its Hiring Our Heroes program, created in collaboration with Toyota.
Researching the veteran’s “journey to employment,” iostudio found that low interview-to-resume submission rate is one of the leading challenges to gaining employment. Simply put, veterans are challenged to write competitive resumes that will qualify them to earn an invitation to a face-to-face interview. The solution, conceived by iostudio and fellow thought partners at Toyota and Hiring Our Heroes, was to create the Personal Branding Resume Engine, a custom built, content rich database that not only translates military jobs and experiences into more familiar terminology, or “civilian speak,” but transposes the information in a professional resume that will attract the attention of civilian hiring managers.
Drawing expertise from human resource directors, recruiters and headhunters, and military transition professionals, iostudio used these three perspectives to understand the reality of the military veteran, and create the syntax with which to translate it. They then set out to create a highly intuitive user experience that’s visually engaging and easy to navigate.
The key innovation is a one-of-a-kind tool that walks veterans through the process of building a resume, step by step. Users create a profile by selecting and describing their specialties, education, jobs, duties, awards and qualifications, with tips to help along the way. The user’s military career history is then translated into more familiar terminology, or “civilian speak,” in the form of a fully-formatted, email-ready resume (plus a printable business card), suitable for submission to applicant tracking systems or human resources professionals. In the future, the site will also generate case-specific job suggestions according to skill set and experience, and will continue to engage veterans through follow-up emails.
“We’re excited to launch the Personal Branding Resume Engine for veterans, a tool that's a step ahead of the existing skills translators or resume builders,” said iostudio Executive Director Andy Blenkle. "iostudio itself has a significant number of veterans on staff, and we’ve found military experience to be incredibly beneficial across a range of positions. This tool will simply help veterans get a foot in the door, setting them up for future success.”
“We knew from the outset that we faced a challenge in creating a tool that truly encompasses the totality of a servicemember’s military experience and iostudio has hit a homerun,” said Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel (Ret.), executive director of Hiring Our Heroes. “The Personal Branding Resume Engine goes well beyond capturing simply a veteran’s Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). This will be a game-changing resource for veterans and transitioning servicemembers in their search for meaningful employment.”
“I’ve spent a lot of time with veterans, particularly in the past year with Hiring Our Heroes at job fairs around the country, and the consistent challenge I see everywhere is the need for a skills translation tool,” said Don Esmond, senior advisor, Toyota Motor Sales, Inc. USA. “By partnering with the US Chamber, and iostudio we’ve been able to produce a resume engine that will have a direct, positive impact on helping lower the unemployment rate among veterans.”
The Personal Branding Resume Engine launches this week in conjunction with the US Chamber, Hiring Our Heroes and Toyota.
