SJCC (San Jose City College) has found an innovative new way to cut costs: bathroom tissue advertising. As the first University in the US to partner with bathroom tissue advertising company Star Toilet Paper, SJCC will be receiving all of its bathroom tissue free of charge. By using the tissue as a vehicle for advertising, Star Toilet Paper is able to use ad revenue to offset the costs of producing the paper; it then gives the paper away for free. This arrangement could also be replicated at other institutions, providing a valuable means of cutting costs for many public universities and colleges across the country.

Beyond universities, Star Toilet Paper believes that this model could also prove helpful to other public and private services which are facing a tough economic climate. Venues that could benefit from this cost saving model are stadiums, theaters, malls and large retail stores.

When questions about the hygienic quality of the paper arise, the company’s founder, Jordan Silverman, responds: “Our product is made with a water-based solution that is gentle on skin and comfortable to use. It has been lab-tested to ensure its safety."

While this may be the first time many have heard of such a product, for the past year the concept has been undergoing localized, controlled tests. “The results have been very gratifying,” says Jordan. “We have very high consumer interaction with the product and very positive responses from people who have used it. Our initial advertisers have been very pleased.”
