New York, NY (PRWEB) March 25, 2013
A study conducted by the University of Massachusetts Medical School found that postmenopausal women taking statins, had a significantly increased risk of developing a type 2 diabetes side effect over women not taking this drug. Lipitor, a statin drug made by Pfizer, was approved by the FDA in 1996 for the treatment of high cholesterol. Since then, Lipitor has become one of the best selling prescription drugs in the world, as sales of this medication have exceeded $125 billion. For some time, medical professionals have been aware of the risk of some rare but serious Lipitor side effects, such as heart attack, Myopathy/Rhabdomyolysis, liver dysfunction, cognitive damage and irreparable damage to the nerves, tendons, and muscle damage, as listed by the FDA. However, only recently has the possible link between statins, like Lipitor and the risk of developing the type 2 diabetes has come to light. Although medical professionals warn patients to not stop taking statins without consulting their doctors, serious questions have been raised regarding the use of statins, like Lipitor for the treatment of high cholesterol in postmenopausal women.

University of Massachusetts’ Statin And Type 2 Diabetes Study, Statins, Lipitor Type 2 Diabetes Side Effect
The University of Massachusetts’ statin and type 2 diabetes study, the results of which were published in January 2012, focused on nearly 154,000 women with a mean age of 63 from 1993 through 2005. By the end of the study, researchers found that more than 10,200 women in the study had developed new cases of type 2 diabetes and that those with a body mass index (BMI) that was less than 25 had a greater risk of developing the disease. After accounting for the participating subjects’ age, weight, lifestyle and other factors that may contribute to the development of diabetes, researchers found that postmenopausal women taking statins like Lipitor had up to a 46 percent increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
FDA Mandates Label Change For Statins, Lipitor Type 2 Diabetes Side Effect
fda-food-and-drug-administrationThe findings of this study sparked the FDA to issue a drug safety communication in February 2012 regarding important safety label changes mandated for Lipitor and other statins. As part of the FDA announcement, the agency also included warnings to the public regarding the risks of serious side effects – including type 2 diabetes – when using Lipitor.
While information regarding the link between statins, Lipitor and type 2 diabetes has sent shockwaves through the medical community, some are calling for further research to be done on statins. “Due to the extensive use of statins in the aging female population, it is critical that more studies are done to help understand the association with statins and the development of diabetes. Women who are taking statins should be aware of the need to check their blood sugars, along with their liver function tests,” stated Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, the director of women and heart disease at the Lenox Hill Hospital in Bronx, New York.
