Lyme Regis luxury hotel and restaurant, the Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant has been awarded the Gold Award in Green Tourism. The Alexandra Hotel is one of Dorset’s finest coastal boutique hotels set in a fabulous location overlooking Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast and becomes the first hotel locally to win the coveted award.
Hotel Director Kathryn Haskins commented on winning the award, “The Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant sits in an enviable position, overlooking one of the most stunning natural coastal views in Britain. We are reminded of the fragility of this special place every time we look out of the window and across Lyme Bay.
Winning the award is great recognition for all the hard work the staff put in on a daily basis to ensure we keep our impact as low as possible, whilst not compromising the standards our guests expect.”
The Gold Award in Green Tourism was presented to the Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant by the Green Tourism Business Scheme which has been running since 1997. With over 2000 members across the whole of the UK and Ireland, it is the largest and most established scheme of its type in the World. Its aim is to encourage individual tourism related businesses to take up the mantle of reducing their environmental impact and ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of sustainable tourism in the future.
The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) has over 150 individual measures in the criteria, which focus on 10 different areas. Each business is scored on up to 60 measures and the results establish what award level they have achieved, i.e. Going Green, Bronze, Silver, or Gold.
The Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant demonstrated significant commitment to its environmental and social responsibility against a rigorous set of criteria, covering a range of areas, like energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and joins a handful of Dorset hotels with the Gold Award.
The Award follows the recent installation of the only public electric car charging station in Lyme Regis – putting Lyme Regis on the map for those visitors looking to explore the Jurassic coastline whilst keeping their environmental impact to a minimum.
Kathryn Haskins commented: “We are always looking for new ways to improve and look after the environment around us. The hotel has taken many steps to reduce the amount of waste produced and this has reduced the cost of recycling. Winning the Gold Award for Green Business Tourism shows how committed we are to responsible tourism practices.”
The Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant is situated on the border between West Dorset and East Devon right in the middle of the Jurassic Coast. The Alexandra has been privately owned and managed by the Haskins family for over 30 years and is a beautiful example of one of the best coastal boutique hotels. Set within private gardens overlooking the famous Cobb harbour and out across the Jurassic Coast of Lyme Bay, guests can wake up to the perfect view in the morning.
