Private Investigators Birmingham comment on the importance of CCTV security systems in response to Sky News article dated 26th March 2013 mobile phone ‘steaming’ thieves are jailed

In my professional opinion, CCTV is one of the best security systems available. The police often call upon individuals who have CCTV in and around their property to provide footage from certain times and dates to aid in their enquiries

According to the report a gang of youths aged 15 to 22 years who stole mobile phones and tablets worth £150,000 from Carphone Warehouse stores in London have been sentenced at Southwark Crown Court after admitting conspiracy to commit burglary (case numbers T20127502, T20127529, T20127530, T20137024, T20137015, T20137028, T20137030 andT20137068). Jahreau Shepherd, 22, and 21-year-old Ugo Wilson, were jailed for four years and 27 months respectively. Perry Hedges, 18, was sentenced to 26 months' detention in a young offenders' institution. Emmanuel Kakala, 18, was given a suspended 18-month prison sentence and ordered to do 80 hours of community service, while 20-year-old Samuel Warnes, received a suspended 12-month prison sentence and one year's supervision. Three boys, aged 15, 16 and 17, were all sentenced to detention and training for 10, 18 and 12 months respectively.

The Sky News report says that CCTV footage showed shoppers and staff being caught in the violence as the youths caused over £50,000 worth of damage ripping stock from display stands.
Detective Inspector Mark Loving, from the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit (NMPCU) said: "This case should act as a warning to anyone involved in this type of activity that the Met and NMPCU will robustly and swiftly deal with those who use intimidation to fulfil their greed."

Investigators at Private Investigators Birmingham, who supply and fit CCTV security systems, believe that the CCTV system in this case was of help to the police investigation as the footage shows how the attack was carried out and may have aided in identifying some of the gang. CCTV is an excellent tool in fighting crime for both individuals and businesses and is used by a wide range of people including local authorities, small and large business and many individuals in and around their homes. Footage can be used in court and analysed to help prevent future crimes from being committed.
