On March 27, 2013, city bike manufacturer Linus Bike releases a statement following a Shape article by Greg Presto regarding different ways a cyclist can improve their strength. While some would assume the way to get stronger results on a cycle would be to simply ride a bike, certain cross-training moves will increase cylists' performance as well.
According to the Shape article, cycling alone isn’t enough to stay fit. When you start to incorporate other forms of exercise, such as upper-body strength training, cyclists can not only see progress in their upper-body, but also in their legs. You need more than just quad strength when riding a bike, says the article. Your core, lower back, triceps, and your neck take a lot of strain when riding a bike, so it’s always a good idea to train those areas as well.
The article mentions that if your back has ever hurt after a long bike ride, chances are a weak core is to blame. Two exercises you can do to increase core strength mentioned in the article are:
- Long sets of exercises like a side plank and reach; holding this pose for up to three minutes can help simulate the core stability you’ll need for long bike rides. “Lie on your left side with your feet stacked, your left elbow directly beneath your left shoulder. Prop yourself up on this elbow and stiffen your body so it forms a straight line from head to heels. Hold this position as you extend your right arm straight toward the ceiling. Maintaining a rigid body, bring your right hand down and thread it under the space beneath your left armpit.”
- The 'stir the pot' is another exercise you can do to increase core strength, according to Shape. “Grab a stability ball and prop yourself up in plank position—elbows on the ball, feet on the floor, and body forming a straight line from head to heels. Maintain this body line as you move your elbows beneath your shoulders to rotate the ball in a small clockwise circle beneath your chest—your hands will look as if they're stirring a pot.”
