Casting and booking agents agree that the best marketing tool an actor can have is a set of killer reels. Headshots and resumes are still required, but to land an audition, agents want to see an actor in action. The industry and media landscape is changing; casting directors are looking for time savers and reels can save time. More and more they are looking for actors to submit reels that are specific to the role. Plus, there are occasions when producers and directors use demo reels as tiebreakers, Max Ghezzi of Killer Demo Reels recently told backstage.com. “Camera presence, personality, command, style, attitude, consistency, versatility, and experience in front of the camera are all scrutinized, until one actor comes out the winner,” he said.
To spotlight this growing trend and to encourage emerging actors to embrace the newfound importance of this media, eTalentShowcase.com, the premier online talent site, is hosting a contest to discover the Best Actor Reel. The contest, which launches April 10th, calls for actors to submit videos that are approximately one-three minutes in length and capture their best work. Actors can chose to submit a reels specific to a genre (drama, comedy, hosting, etc) or they can submit a composite of highlights from past roles.
Ten finalists will be selected by eTalentShowcase.com judges; the voting will then be open to the fans on the talent site’s Facebook page. The winning reel will be featured on the site’s Youtube Channel as the featured video for one month. It will also be featured on the site’s home page for a week. Additionally, eTalentShowcase.com will share and promote the winning reel across all social media platforms and issue a national press release about the winner.
“In our daily communication with casting directors and agents, we learned that actors have to place a more intense focus on reels,” says Edward Olimpio, vice president of marketing. “This is the perfect contest to help up-and-coming actors pull together their best work and become more proficient in video. Even on our job boards, we see more potential employers asking for video submissions,” he says. “Plus, eTalentShowcase.com is the ideal platform for actors to showcase these reels. The site is designed to be media centric, so casting professionals can easily search and find video. Other talent sites just don’t offer that layer of functionality. We think this contest will be a win for actors and a win for casting pros looking to discover fresh talent.”
