UGallery.com, an online art gallery, entered the wedding market this week with the launch of their gift registry for original art.
“The wedding gift industry is large and growing, and we see an opportunity to innovate in the category. There is a lot of synergy with our online business model, so strategically it is a perfect fit,” said Stephen Tanenbaum, co-founder of UGallery.
UGallery’s entrance into the wedding market was prompted by shifting trends in the category. The average marrying age increased nearly 30% since wedding registries were invented, reaching 31 for grooms and 29 for brides in 2012, according to a study by The Knot. Furthermore, research sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found that co-habitation before marriage grew 1,500% in the last 50 years. Almost 70% of couples who married in 2012 lived together before their wedding.
“Art is a perfect fit for the wedding occasion. Most couples already have household basics before they get married, so registering for a toaster or nice bath towels is less relevant for the modern couple,” said Charlotte Nichols, Director of Marketing at UGallery. “An original painting is a unique, meaningful, and personal way to invest in the home where you start your marriage together.”
The average value of a registry in 2011 was $5,158, according to The Knot study. In recent years, wedding registries have shifted away from traditional gifts towards creative solutions like honeymoon funds, charity funds, and house down payment funds. UGallery expects art to be one of the leading gift categories in the next few years.
UGallery has partnered with The Knot to promote the launch of the registry. The Knot is currently featured as a guest curator on UGallery’s Pinterest board, promoting artful weddings to the combined 1.8 million UGallery and Knot followers.
UGallery’s registry incorporates modern wedding trends such as group gifting and cash gifting, allowing guests to contribute an amount to a painting or give a gift card to the site. UGallery provides a risk-free trial period, so any piece of art is returnable to the site.
