It’s hard to believe Phish was spawned 30 years ago, at the University of Vermont no less.
While the band caught on with a growing group of adoring fans, they broke up in 2004. Now, after reuniting in 2008, they’re flirting with mainstream success once again.
Known for their phenomenally eclectic music, the band's extended jams combine classic rock and roll – including hard, progressive, and psychedelic rock – with jazz, funk, folk, bluegrass, reggae, country, blues, barbershop quartet and classical influences.
Then there are their concerts. No two shows are ever the same. Each one is different, with spontaneous staging, skits and song lists to make it memorable in its own way. The result is a fan base bordering on the fanatical, as the latest round of search activity for seats shows.
Phish kicks off their latest road trip at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor, Maine on July 3, and follows up with three gigs at the Sarasota Performing Arts Center in Sarasota Springs, New York July 5 – 7, 2013.
The band then travels to Toronto, Canada: Holmdel, New Jersey; Wantagh, New York; Columbia, Maryland; Alpharetta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Quincy, Washington; Stateline, Nevada; and San Francisco and Los Angeles, California.
Currently, the wrap is set for a three-night weekend stand at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado on August 30 and 31, and September 1, 2013.
“Phish, while not as widely known as some of the other top name acts, is very successful on tour. They are wildly popular with a broad-based, surprisingly multi-generational appeal,” said Felina Martinez at online ticket marketplace BuyAnySeat.com. “Just as in the past, it is expected that all of their shows will sell out.”
“That’s why we’re proud to offer fans the most complete and continually refreshed selection of concert tickets, with a worry-free guarantee to protect their purchase,” said Martinez.
“To access the selection of cheap Phish tickets we have available, fans can go to BuyAnySeat.com and search for Phish – then select their tickets,” said Martinez.
Formed in 1983, the band is made up of four members—Trey Anastasio (guitars, lead vocals), Mike Gordon (bass, vocals), Jon Fishman (drums, percussion, vocals), and Page McConnell (keyboards, vocals). The group broke up in 2004, but reunited in March of 2009 for a series of concerts called Phish in Hampton and a 13-show summer tour.
They also headlined Bonnaroo 2009 with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Beastie Boys and Nine Inch Nails. Then, due to demand, 12 added dates were announced as a Late Summer Tour, including multi-night shows at storied venues such as Red Rocks in Colorado and The Gorge in Washington.
Phish's fourteenth studio album, Joy, was also released in September of 2009. The band followed up with Festival 8 and a 3D movie called Phish 3D in 2010, along with a 29-date run.
Phish headlined Bonnaroo 2012 with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Radiohead; and for the third consecutive year, performed a set of sold-out New Year's shows at Madison Square Garden.
The musically diverse rockers also began appearing in video games in 2009. They also have an ice cream flavor named after them: Ben & Jerry's Phish Food, to recognize their shared Vermont heritage.
