Expanding upon the theme “Now this is where things get interesting” and drawing on Eric Brand’s worldwide explorations to source materials, craftspeople and inspiration, Eric commented, “We designed a lounge for the Exploratorium’s opening Gala to capture the essence of exploration as it relates to design and reveal the science behind what comprises it. It’s an educational approach to appreciating inventive furnishings.” Mirroring the Exploratorium’s interactive nature, guests can examine the make-up of materials and finishes, such as the life cycle of Mother of Pearl, or Japanese acrylic – and the process of converting petroleum – and the chemical make up of crystal stone as they mingle with fellow partygoers and take in the revamped museum.

Eric Brand’s Exploration Lounge – complete with a view of the Bay Bridge and the new light show – features backlit maps highlighting the origins of the vast materials used to manufacture innovative furnishings and has hammered silver consoles and cocktail tables, complete with crystal stone consoles for guests’ drinks. For the event, Eric Brand designed a Mylar tube light box complete with hand-stitched handles – inspired by a former staff member of the Exploratorium – which diffuses light into fantastic patterns to give “explorers” a brilliant view of the exquisite opening gala.
