This is the first study conducted on thousands of employees across multiple industries that finds conclusive evidence that our online reference-checking solution predicts future job performance and predicts involuntary turnover.
Wayne, PA (PRWEB) March 28, 2013
SkillSurvey®, Inc. announced today that the International Journal of Selection and Assessment published results of an extensive, large-sample study showing that SkillSurvey’s Pre-Hire 360®, an online reference-checking assessment, statistically predicts involuntary turnover and future job performance of those hired.
Dr. Cynthia A. Hedricks of SkillSurvey, Dr. Chet Robie of Wilfrid Laurier University, and Dr. Fred Oswald of Rice University, all contributors to the study, found that the SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360® structured online reference-checking assessment aids recruiters and hiring managers in improving outcomes for new hires. This solution is patent-pending and was previously named Top HR Product of the Year by Human Resource Executive magazine.
“Data from more than 7,200 new hires who requested feedback from approximately 37,000 references were analyzed in just one of the components of the research, specifically, the study that focused on involuntary turnover,” said Cynthia A. Hedricks Ph.D., Chief Analytics Officer, SkillSurvey, Inc. “This provided compelling evidence that receiving confidential, structured feedback on a job candidate’s competencies during the hiring process helps recruiters and hiring managers make better hiring decisions. This is the first study conducted on thousands of employees across multiple industries that finds conclusive evidence that our online reference-checking solution is valid, reliable, predicts future job performance, predicts involuntary turnover, and shows no adverse impact in the hiring process.”
Key research findings:
- Selecting candidates who are “endorsed” by their references (i.e., receive high overall scores and high reference response rates) on SkillSurvey’s Pre-Hire 360® will decrease an organization’s involuntary turnover.
- Candidates’ ratings from their references on this assessment do not differ by demographic sub-groups, thus meeting the EEOC’s criteria for compliance with the four-fifths rule and mitigating legal risk for the employer.
- The SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360® online, competency-based reference assessment meets professional levels of reliability, validity, and compliance, compared to reference-checks by phone or from other providers that lack these necessary scientific qualities.
The reference-checking practice in this research is based on customers utilizing the SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360® software that gathers confidential input from a job candidate’s references by using behaviorally-based, job-specific surveys delivered through an electronic platform. The surveys reveal a candidate’s job-related competencies and his or her strengths and developmental needs, and the input from managers, peers and business partners provide a multi-dimensional view of the candidate’s past work performance. The SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360® overcomes the usual reserve of former managers and peers, because they are released from liability by the candidate and their feedback is treated confidentially. Both quantitative ratings and verbatim feedback are aggregated into a report that is made available to the recruiter or hiring manager typically within just two business days.
“The results are clear, SkillSurvey’s Pre-Hire 360® software decreases employee turnover, mitigates legal concerns and improves hiring decisions,” said Ray Bixler, President and CEO of SkillSurvey, Inc. “The more committed human resources professionals are to using a scientifically-validated online reference-checking solution, with years of candidate and reference data, the more success they’ll experience with every new hire.”
In addition to involuntary turnover and future job performance, the study also found that feedback gathered from a candidate’s references is predictive of higher supervisor ratings post-hire and overall new-hire satisfaction with the job. The use of the SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360® structured, online reference-checking process will continue to increase, as businesses embrace the use of technology in candidate selection. As companies use over 300 job-specific surveys to gather confidential feedback from multiple raters, candidates will also benefit by being more accurately assessed on their potential contributions to their prospective organizations.
