Program to Officially Launch in May Despite Hurricane Sandy Challenges

After some setbacks from Hurricane Sandy, we are thrilled to see this finally coming to fruition

Commuter bike company Brooklyn Cruiser commented on New York City’s forthcoming bike share program. Having launched in 2011, Brooklyn Cruiser sees this as being a big boost not only for city biking, but also for the many businesses in and around the New York Metro Area.

“After some setbacks from Hurricane Sandy, we are thrilled to see this finally coming to fruition,” said Brooklyn Cruiser President Ryan Zagata. “We applaud Mayor Bloomberg, Commissioner Sadik-Khan, Transportation Alternatives and the countless others who have fought tirelessly for this program,” he added.

The Citi Bike Share Program is a self-service system providing members with an easy access to a network of thousands of bicycles. Riders can pick up their bike from one of over 600 stations and then return the bike to any of the hundreds of stations to be located throughout the city. Citi Bike will consist of 600 stations, 10,000 bikes in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. It is privately sponsored by Citi and MasterCard and privately operated by NYC Bike Share LLC, with no public funding.

“From a business perspective, this program not only provides a facility to introduce non-enthusiasts to cycling, but it also introduces riders to the many small businesses in and around the over 280 miles of bike lanes throughout New York City,” Zagata says. “It is a tremendous example of the type of joint public-private partnerships that benefit so many businesses.”
