Audit Confirms Managed Travel Program Delivers Better Rates than Open Booking with Public Fares

For the last ten years, Topaz Internet audits continue to reveal that managed travel programs consistently produce lower fares than those found in an unmanaged travel environment.

Travizon, a global leader in travel, meeting, and expense management services, shared the results of a client-sponsored business travel audit of its managed travel programs. The audit confirmed that managed travel programs yield greater cost savings than open booking using public, online fares from Expedia, Orbitz, and individual airline websites. Travizon’s client, a Fortune 500 multinational firm, released the audit results in conjunction with Topaz International, an independent consulting firm that provides companies with airfare audits, consulting services, and corporate travel metrics.

Prompted by recent press about “travel 2.0” and open booking trends in the business travel industry, the audit was conducted for 30 days in October 2012 on behalf of a Fortune 500 Travizon client and longtime advocate for managed corporate travel. The 30-day comparison weighed fares purchased via Travizon’s booking channel of full service and Concur Travel against Internet fares found on Expedia, Orbitz, and individual airline websites. The same client had commissioned a similar audit through Topaz in 2010.

The audit results were significant. More than 83 percent of all fares booked through Travizon’s managed program cost less than online, spot fares. Domestic flights represented the majority of transactions, and were purchased through Concur Travel—the client’s selected online booking channel—using its custom booking tool. These managed transactions were lower than Internet fares 93 percent of the time.

The Topaz audit also determined that fares purchased through Travizon channels undercut public fares by an average margin of almost 24 percent. For the year, Travizon’s managed travel program offered a forecasted savings of $1,644,998.
